HEAVEN & HELL THE DEVIL YOU KNOW
Terwijl we het ondertussen wel zat zijn om Ozzie steeds maar als een karikatuur van zichzelf over het TV-scherm te zien waggelen, pakken zijn oud-collega's van Black Sabbath het muzikaal tegenwoordig weer wat sterker aan. De jaren met Ronnie James Dio op zang werden een paar jaar terug al nieuw leven ingeblazen door een tour onder de naam Heaven And Hell en met 'The Devil You Know' hoor je de stem van één van de beste hardrockzangers ooit eindelijk ook weer eens door je woonkamer galmen.
De heren zijn ondertussen aardig op leeftijd en dat is terug te horen op de plaat. Niet dat het vloeiende gitaarspel van Tony Iommi of de zuigende baslijnen van Geezer Butler daar onder te lijden hebben, maar het tempo ligt over het geheel wel erg laag.
Een track als 'Eating The Cannibals' springt er daarom direct uit. Lekker up-tempo, boordevol stevige riffs, gierende solo's en een Dio die hoorbaar het uiterste van zichzelf vergt. En dat is precies wat er op de rest van de plaat een beetje mist.
De plaat opent weliswaar ijzersterk met 'Atom And Evil' en 'Bible Black' en ook nummers als 'The Turn Of The Screw' en 'Neverwhere' zijn sterkte staaltjes hardrock in ultieme, klassieke vorm maar de routine klinkt regelmatig net wat te sterk door. Veel solo's volgens hetzelfde stramien, Dio die ver binnen de grenzen van zijn vroegere kunnen blijft en een tempo dat nagenoeg over de hele plaat hetzelfde is zorgen ervoor dat dit toch niet helemaal een perfect geslaagde comeback is.
Dat neemt niet weg dat 'The Devil You Know' nog steeds een plaat waar iedere fan van Black Sabbaths Dio years gerust voor naar de platenboer mag lopen. Het niveau is natuurlijk nog steeds belachelijk hoog en ook productioneel klopt het aan alle kanten.

Nektar's jubileum album
"Fortyfied" is de titel van het nieuwe album van de Amerikaanse 'oudjes' Nektar. Je zou zeggen dat de titel verkeerd is gespeld, maar dit is met opzet zo gedaan. Wat is er namelijk aan de hand? De band viert dit jaar zijn 40-jarige jubileum. Daarom wil het gezelschap graag met deze release stilstaan - samen met de fans - bij deze heuglijke mijlpaal!
Het album verschijnt om precies te zijn op 16 april aanstaande. Je kunt het album nu al bestellen via de Nektar winkel.

In de jaren ‘70 maakte de Nederlandse jazz-rock-classic-symfo formatie Ekseption internationaal furore met hun virtuoze vertaling van klassieke meesterwerken naar popmuziek. Met respect voor de componisten liet Ekseption het poppubliek kennismaken met een nieuwe muziekvorm, waarmee de formatie miljoenen lp’s verkocht.

Samen met Iron Maiden was Saxon de belangrijkste band binnen de New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, die gedurende de jaren tachtig in Engeland losbarste.
De eerste vier albums van de band gelden als ware metalklassiekers. De eerste drie zijn nu opnieuw uitgebracht met vele extra tracks.
Saxon werd in 1977 geformeerd in het Britse Barnsley als Son Of A Bitch. Al snel werd de bandnaam verwisseld voor Saxon. Terwijl in Engeland de punk en new wave om zich heen sloeg was het voor metalbands als Iron Maiden , Def Leppard en ook Saxon moeilijk een platendeal te scoren. Met het spelen van voorprogramma’s van ondermeer Motörhead speelde ze zich in de kijker. Het Franse Carrere label bood ze uiteindelijk onderdak.
Saxon
De fans van het eerste uur werden niet geheel tevreden gesteld met het gelijknamige Saxon debuutalbum. Hoewel songs als ‘Judgement Day’ en ‘Still Fit To Boogie’ al tijdenlang als live favorieten werden gekenmerkt kwamen ze er in de lichte productie niet optimaal uit. De rest van het album was zeker niet slecht maar de ware live power ontbrak totaal. Je kan in alle songs horen dat er meer potentie in de songs zit. Het album wordt wel gezien als het allereerste album binnen de New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
Extra’s: De originele Son Of A Bitch demo’s uit 1978, een vijf tracks tellende BBC sessie bij Tommy Vance’s Friday Rock Show, een live uitvoering van ‘Judgement Day’ en een drietal live songs opgenomen tijdens Monsters Of Rock in 1980 te Donnington.
Strong Arm Of The Law
Met het tweede album werd de kracht van Saxon veel meer duidelijk. In Pete Hinton werd de juiste producer gevonden om de dynamiek van de band ook in de studio te laten volgroeien. Openingssong ‘Heavy Metal Thunder’ is daarvan een prima voorbeeld. Songs als ‘To Hell And Back Again’,’20.000 feet’ en ‘Taking Your Chances’ werden daarnaast ook snel klassiekers binnen het Saxon oeuvre. Het tweede album bleek een ware New Wave Of British Heavy Metal klassieker.
Extra’s: Een 4 tracks tellende BBC session uit 1982 en alternatieve versies van ‘To Hell And Back Again’,‘Dallas 1.PM’,’The Eagle Has Landed’ en ‘747 (Strangers In The Night)’.

This was kept under a tight lid for a while, but with the official announcement now imminent, we were given the green light. Remember, you’ve read it here first.
Iron Maiden did a bold move with their Flight 666 project, but let’s face it — Sydney, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Rio are hardly unique places for a band to play. Deep Purple are known to boldly go and play where no band of such calibre has played before, be it on the snow high up in the Alps, at 8 o’clock in the morning on a London street, above the Polar circle under the midnight sun, or inside the communist China.
This coming New Year’s Eve the band will play under the midnight sun once again. yes, that’s right — in one of the most inhospitable places on the face of the Earth — the South Pole. The project is financed by an anonymous benefactor and sponsored by the Airbus Industries, who are giving them the use of one of the brand spanking new A380 Superjumbo jets in exchange for publicity. During one of the breaks in the busy touring schedule, Steve Morse will go to Toulouse to undergo training on the gigantic airliner that can take up to 800 passengers.
On December 31, Captain Morse and the band, accompanied by all their gear, press entourage and a film crew, will board Purple Air Flight 001 (freshly painted in appropriate colours) in Australia and fly to the South Pole. Once there, a portable stage will be unloaded from the cargo bay and set up on the ice, and the band will perform an open air gig for the staff of the the Amundsen-Scott Polar Station, toast the New Year, pack everything up and fly back. It is also our understanding that a very special guest will be joining the band on stage. The concert footage will be used for the upcoming muti-DVD box set Live Around The World Vol.2: Where No Band Has Gone Before.
There will be very limited number of seats available for the fans. They will be sold on a first come first serve basis. Watch this space for further details.
Next year the band will start training for a flight to space to perform on the Moon. NASA and the European Space Agency are already busy at work on reducing the weight of the Hammond organ.

Teenage Kicks" is a 1978 song originally recorded by Northern Irish punk rock group The Undertones. Composed by the band's principal songwriter, John O'Neill, it was championed by DJ John Peel, and was his all-time favourite song.[1] The Teenage Kicks EP was produced by Dave Smyth,[2] who produced many of the Good Vibrations records in the 1970s, at his studio, Wizard Sound Studios in Belfast.
"Teenage Kicks" was acoustically covered by Snow Patrol in tribute to John Peel, and was played at his funeral. Bands that have performed this song also include Razorlight, Ash, Skunk Anansie, The Pink Spiders, Busted, Groovie Ghoulies, Sahara Hotnights, The Saw Doctors, Therapy?, Buzzcocks, Nouvelle Vague, Green Day, Boom Boom Kid, Thee Headcoatees, Franz Ferdinand, The Coral, The Raconteurs, Violent Delight, Criminal Mischief, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, KT Tunstall, Beatsteaks, Seabear, Every Dirty Street and Pelucas Rosas.
The riff for "Teenage Kicks" is almost identical to the riff for "Some Kinda Hate" by The Misfits. Both songs were recorded in the same year, 1978.
In 1978, John Peel played the song twice in a row on his Radio 1 show. Peel often rated new bands' songs with 1 to 5 stars. He liked "Teenage Kicks" so much he awarded 28 stars.
In 2004, a mural in tribute to him, featuring the opening line of the song, appeared on a Belfast flyover.[3]
In 2001 Peel had written in The Guardian that apart from his name all he wanted on his gravestone were the words, "Teenage dreams, so hard to beat", from the lyrics of "Teenage Kicks".[4] In February 2008, a headstone engraved with the line was placed on his grave in Great Finborough, Suffolk.[5]
In May and June 2007, Irish radio station Today FM, acknowledging the Undertones original as the best version, held a competition to find "the second best version." The winner was the band Prison Love,[6] who won with a bluegrass version.[7]
In December 2008, radio2XS listeners voted the song the best all-time rock single. The station allowed votes for any rock track from 1956 to 2008, except Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody', DJ Jeff Cooper claiming that "no-one in their right mind would ever want to hear that pretentious twaddle again"!
Fans of Derry City F.C. regularly sing the song during the team's games.
